Browser now cloud based, adds social sharing

Nokia has just debuted the newest version of its web browser app for phones across its Series 40 range of phones. The launch of the new browser version brings cloud-based browsing and social media integration, among other features, to Nokia's entry-level handset line.

Aimed primarily at the "Next Billion," relatively new mobile Internet users in developing areas such as China, Russia, and across Africa, the new version of the browser uses cloud compression and caching in order to reduce data load on the user end. The browser also has a revamped user interface making it easier to find and install web apps.

The update, available for download from the Nokia Store, runs on all Nokia Series 40 phones. The company recently announced the shipment of its 1.5 billionth Series 40 phone, a sign of the continuing success of the 13 year-old line, which was once the core of Nokia's cellphone platform, but has since become an offering targeted at the developing world. The improved capabilities of the new browser version reflect the stiff competition facing the Series 40 line, as it needs to add complexity to fend off low-cost Android-based competitors.
