Sprint drops HTC Evo 3D as Evo 4G LTE edges closer

HTC Evo 3D ramps down on one-year anniversary

Sprint has quietly dropped the HTC Evo 3D near its one-year anniversary. The glasses-free 3D phone is no longer available online and now is in limited stock at retail stores. At present, the Evo Design 4G is the only as-new HTC Android phone on the carrier.

The exit is timed just weeks ahead of the Evo 4G LTE, which replaces the Evo 3D as Sprint's top-end Android phone. Dropping the Evo 3D entirely is a contrast with Sprint's attitude towards the original Evo 4G, however, as the 2010 phone stayed on the carrier's roster for almost two years. It's implied, but not stated, that the Evo 3D didn't resonate with buyers as well as its predecessor.

The Evo 4G LTE we tried (above) is more of a direct spiritual successor to the Evo 4G and focuses once more on the screen size, performance, and 4G over tricks like 3D video. Sprint may not have entirely given up on 3D, as a possible Evo 3D sequel may have been spotted with 2012 styling, but it's considered less likely given the product overlap. [via Android Police]
