Facebook for Android gets direct camera, messaging shortcuts

updated 07:45 pm EDT, Fri April 20, 2012

Facebook Android now jumps directly to camera tool

Facebook has given its mobile app a handful of Android-only features with an app update (Google Play). The new version now makes shortcuts for the camera and messages that will let users post photos and messages without having to launch the main app, whether through the app tray or a home screen shortcut. It takes advantage of Android's support for shortcuts that leap to a specific part of an app, which aren't yet options in iOS.

Moe updates focus on messaging, which now has the option of creating group messages or inviting friends to an ongoing chat. Previously, the same options had only been available in the dedicated Messenger chat app. Unspecified bug fixes and better performance are part of the update as well.

The app has varying requirements, but some features will typically need Android 2.2 or later.
