Microsoft backtracks on Windows Phone 8 upgrade comments

updated 11:45 am EDT, Thu April 19, 2012

MS Evangelist gave wrong impression on WP7

Microsoft Evangelist Nuno Silva has corrected his comments on upgrading devices from Windows Phone 7 to Windows Phone 8. Previously, Silva said in a video interview that all Windows Phone Devices, even first generation models, would get Window Phone 8. He claims to have "confused app compatibility with phone updatability", giving the wrong impression.

"The point I was attempting to make was simply that existing Windows Phone applications will run on the next version of Windows Phone. This is the same guidance that Microsoft shared late last year," he wrote on his blog, adding "While we have given Windows Phone developers this preliminary guidance on app compatibility to help them with long term project planning, Microsoft does not have any further news to share on future products at this time."

Microsoft has previously confirmed the next version of Windows Phone would support earlier apps, but would not talk about OS upgrades. With the next Windows Phone version rumored to be out by summer, reports of incompatibility may impact current-generation hardware sales if the major OS upgrade will be unavailable.
