Samsung Galaxy S III launch carries Apple-level security

updated 06:55 pm EDT, Wed April 18, 2012

Galaxy S III prototypes enclosed in dummy boxes

Samsung's Galaxy S III launch is running under security levels previously associated most closely with Apple, scoops on Wednesday unearthed. A tip to The Verge understood that test units were being put in generic enclosures that disguise the actual look for field testing. One such example was caught by Gizmodo in Brazil (pictured) and was "not even close" to the final look.

None of the supposed photos or renders to date have been accurate, the insider said. The person added that even the final name wasn't available. The test mule was said to have a 12-megapixel camera, although this isn't verifiable.

While the disguises aren't new, the lack of any definite leaks is relatively new for Samsung and uncommon outside of Apple. Many Samsung products are leaked months in advance and leave the official release to confirming a handful of remaining details. The secrecy, which included a rare no-show for the next Galaxy at Mobile World Congress, is likely intended to get a maximum level of impact from the May 3 gathering.

Much is riding on the success of the new design. Samsung is thriving on smartphones and considers the current Galaxy S II its centerpiece. A muted launch for the third-generation Android leader could have a ripple effect on the entire line and could see primary rival Apple recapture interest more easily with its next iPhone.

    Good Phones - No Ecosystem

Samsung has decent phones, but they still don't understand that no matter how much they try to copy Apple (look of the OS, packaging, and now launch secrecy), they don't have the Ecosystem that Apple has built. They have to compete with every other Android phone maker out there sharing Google's ecosystem.

    It's all about the lawyers

Apple can file for an injunction before they ship if Samesung lets it slip that it looks just like the iPhone 4.

Looks like a iPhone 3GS! But the camera is in the middle of the phone and there are two flashes. No design imitation here! I mean Samsung would never look two years back for inspiration...

    who cares?

Who cares with Samsung products anyway? Samsung products are "me too" products with zero innovation, zero charisma, zero excitement, made of cheap plastic.
