New $150 Android tablet to take on Kindle Fire

updated 05:20 pm EDT, Tue April 17, 2012

Xtex My Tablet joins the entry-level tablet fray

While the premium tablet market is largely dominated by the iPad, Amazon's Kindle Fire has managed to carve out a niche position for itself at an entry-level price point. That niche position will soon see competition with the introduction of Xtex's MyTablet 7, a seven-inch slate with specs comparable to its higher-priced competitors, and a price point much lower than the rest of the competition. At $150, the tablet comes with just an 800x480-pixel display but a 1.5 GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage expandable up to 32GB.

The My Tablet 7 runs Android 4.0.3 and will also have uncommon extras for the price, such as a two-megapixel front-facing webcam and 1080p HDMI output. At its listed price, the My Tablet undercuts Amazon's Kindle Fire, currently considered the leader in the low-cost sphere.

The market for smaller, lower-priced tablets has become more competitive of recent, with Samsung releasing its own 7.7-inch 4G tablet, the Galaxy Tab 7.7, in March. Even Apple is rumored to be working on its own iPad mini, a 7.85-inch product that would compete with Amazon, Samsung, and Xtex's offerings.
