Sprint may have LTE ready for Chicago, NYC, more by mid-year

Sprint LTE could have surprise expansion

Sprint might have more than just the six initial cities for its LTE-based 4G rollout in mid-year. A leak of internal documentation to TechnoBuffalo has shown that the LTE version of Sprint's Network Vision consolidation has been in progress in several other major cities since December. Akron, Chicago, Fort Worth, Nashville, New York, Rialto and Stockton are listed along with the known LTE upgrade cities.

If clinging to the existing schedule, all of the newly uncovered cities should already be in the "ready for testing" phase, although how long they will be in testing isn't clear. Some of the confirmed cities reached the phase later than the unmentioned ones.

It's possible that some or all of the newly uncovered cities might miss the initial deployment of LTE on Sprint, which is unofficially anticipated for June. However, they show that Sprint plans to quickly expand its LTE coverage and could cover a much larger population base sooner than expected. The provider is racing to match its coverage to rivals like AT&T and Verizon as well as to make sure it gets the latest devices, likely including future iPhones and iPads.
