ASUS takes sign-ups for Transformer Prime GPS adapter

updated 05:35 pm EDT, Mon April 16, 2012

ASUS' Transformer Prime GPS kit fix available

ASUS has put up its promised application page for those looking to get the GPS adapter fix for the Transformer Prime. As of Monday, ASUS Members can apply for a kit using the Android tablet's serial number to see if they qualify. The kit is free, but users have to apply for one before July 31.

The adapter itself is referred to as a dongle but is ultimately a bar that grafts on to the Transformer Prime's docking port. As a consequence, the GPS can't be used in conjunction with the tablet's namesake keyboard dock, limiting its usefulness on the road.

ASUS' issue primarily affects early production runs of the Prime, whose almost entirely metal enclosure guaranteed poor GPS, even after software updates. Future versions replaced a key area with a plastic surface that gave proper GPS reception.
