Apple, Australia talks fail on changing new iPad's 4G name

Apple declines to change iPad name so far

Apple and Australia's Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) were unable after negotiations on Monday to come to a resolution on concerns over the new iPad's 4G claims. In at least initial mediation talks, Apple declined to change the "Wi-Fi + 4G" name. The American company had agreed to offer refunds for upset customers and to provide more accurate marketing.

The reasons for refusing to move on the subject weren't clear, although they may stem from Apple's policy on simplification. Whenever possible, it has insisted on having common models across the globe and argues for as few differences as possible, even down to packaging. One of the few exceptions to the rule has been in Japan, where existing naming issues made Apple rename its AirPort devices to AirMac.

Requiring a name change may be more difficult for the ACCC than a warning. Although the iPad can't connect to Australian LTE at present, it still has 4G hardware inside. Apple has previously argued that the HSPA+ 3G that Australia can use is technically definable as 4G in some areas.

Because they're slow downunder to roll out new technology, Apple should have to rename its product? The product still does 4G - it is named correctly. Time to get with it Australia!

If a Chinese company did the same

And sold a product in the US that implied a high value feature was supported but the feature was only really supported in China, you know they would catch the fury of regulators and consumer groups. Why is this really any different?
