Virtual carrier Ting to offer LTE when Sprint does

updated 01:15 pm EDT, Fri April 13, 2012

Ting promises LTE at the same time as Sprint

Virtual network operator Ting revealed that it will launch an LTE network at the same time as Sprint, which it currently relies on for its CDMA and 3G networks. Ting also now uses Clearwire's WiMAX network for mobile broadband, though if this will change once Sprint rolls out its LTE offering mid-year remains to be seen. According to an executive from Ting's parent company Tucows, Ting's LTE offerings will include USB data modems, mobile hotspots, and "pretty spiffy" smartphones.

Ting is a newcomer, having only started service in the US on February 1. It doesn't charge overages, with users getting bumped up to a higher tier once they go over their allotted minutes, texts, or megabytes. Conversely, if they use enough minutes to qualify them for a lower tier, they will get a credit for the difference on their next bill.

An online tool lets users track their progress and users can even share their quota of minutes, texts, and data between multiple handsets. [via FierceWireless]
