Instagram gains over 10 million users in 10 days

updated 01:00 pm EDT, Fri April 13, 2012

Surge linked to Android, Facebook buyout

Photo-sharing service Instagram has managed to gain over 10 million users in the course of 10 days, reports note. When Instagram first reached Android users 10 days ago, the service had a user base of roughly 30 million people. That number is now in excess of 40 million and growing.

Instagram first launched in October 2010, and had 1 million users by December, only reaching the 10 million mark in September 2011. The massive leap in April is firstly attributed to Android, which has some 500 million users, a massive boost to Instagram's previously iOS-only userbase. Perhaps not coincidentally Facebook announced its buyout of Instagram on April 9th, generating intense media coverage due to the deal's $1 billion pricetag.

    "Perhaps not coincidentally..."

Yes indeed. Maybe all that media frenzy had something to do with all those new users signing up to see what the hoopla all about.

Most will delete the app in about 3 days

Its a getting attention now but once users realize how limit the application is they will remove it from their phone just like I did. Its really a lame app. There are only a few filters that make very minor changes and then the images can only be viewed on their website. You can not share images via bluetooth or even email. The application is about as useful as a one legged man at an a**-kicking contest.
