Apple, Philippe Starck said tackling 'revolutionary' product

updated 10:00 am EDT, Fri April 13, 2012

Starck would design Apple product for eight months

Well-known French product designer Philippe Starck has claimed in an interview with France's Le Figaro that he was recently working with Apple on a design. The "revolutionary" project would supposedly be due to arrive in eight months. He wouldn't say more about its nature, citing Apple's "religious cult of secrecy."

He did admit that he had been meeting Steve Jobs at his Palo Alto home once a month for the seven years before Jobs' death, although primarily for personal discussions of "all things interesting." He would be visiting Jobs' widow Laurene instead.

The project, if real and at all relevant to the product line, could represent anything from a peripheral to a mobile device or the repeatedly rumored TV set. Starck is known for being willing to design at any scale in technology, ranging from Microsoft mice (pictured) to LaCie hard drives and Parrot tower speakers. He has also designed everything from commodity products to whole buildings.

Bringing Starck in would still be an odd move for Apple. Jonathan Ive and his team are still considered the cornerstone of Apple's design language to date, and little reason has existed for the company to go to an outside source. It could represent a rare special collaboration to invigorate Apple design or even a non-product, such as a retail store or something else that Ive would normally never address.

Jobs was always known for embracing design with products, particularly in the minimalist or 'obvious' designs embodied by Ive, Starck, and earlier designers like Dieter Rams.

    It's the Yacht

Chill out - it's not for any Apple product -- the timeline he mentioned corresponds to the Yacht Steve Jobs was working, for himself and his family (hence why Starck will continue to meet with Laurene Jobs).

Very little ability to put 2+2 together by this site's editors.

    What else is new? :)

Besides, we should count ourselves lucky if Starck is not getting his hands on any new Apple gear. Ever seen this MS mouse up close? It's butt-ugly, feels cheap & plasticky and is nothing short of an ergonomical desaster.

Some kind of input in Apple's new headquarters new doubt. "revolutionary" is the scale of his ego.

For a glimpse of what it might look like -

    Check out the MYA

    Melnichenko Yacht A, that is
on the stern there is only a huge silver "A",
so at the ports the crews refer to it as MYA

Criticized on popular yachting magazines like,
loved by forward thinking Industrial Designers,
and hated by crew chiefs that have to keep up all the
complex hydraulics that move everything from the
tender's gates and ramps, helipad covers, to the retractable nav lights and many cameras...

2 years ago I had the opportunity to visit her at Tenerife,
(only the public & crew spaces the rest is secret to even most of the crew),
with her immaculately clean inward leaning almost featureless superstructure
(during the day even the light ports are closed off and flush)
looking more like a military craft (actually shares the wave piercing hull with new military craft)
    she sure is awe inspiring.

It was Christmas and there was even an 8 feet tall tree on the huge telescopic retractable bow mast...

Steve undoubtedly had GREAT taste for Design,
and being his character so in line with Melnichenko's
you can bet everyone in the yachting world eagerly awaits what his boat will look like...

If it's a yacht, why is he working with Apple?
