Mass production stalls

Canon has admitted that its flagship EOS-1D X camera and EF 24-70mm lens are facing production delays that will affect the expected ship dates. The company originally promised to ship the 1D X late in March, however the camera is now expected to be delayed until this summer.

The EOS-1D X features significant improvements to the image processor, bringing a 17-fold performance improvement compared to the 1D Mark IV. The 18-megapixel camera also features a 100,000-pixel metering system, 12fps continuous shooting in RAW format, a 61-point autofocus system, and light sensitivity up to ISO 51,200.

The camera also brings a rugged housing and is claimed to be built for at least 400,000 shutter clicks. The sensor is kept clean by two different vibrating mechanisms, while a gigabit Ethernet port supports high-speed tethering.

The EOS-1D X is now expected to ship sometime in the middle of June, while the EF 24-70mm lens is delayed until June. The company has yet to provide full details regarding the reason for production delays.
