Intel working with 10 Chinese, global firms on Win 8 tablets

Intel to bring out 'many' Win 8 tablets in 2012

Intel China chairman Sean Maloney at the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing on Wednesday said many Intel-based tablets with Windows 8 are coming before year's end. He went on to say the company is working with 10 Chinese and global hardware makers on such tablets, but didn't name them. The most likely candidate chip to power the tablets is the Atom Z2460, also dubbed Medfield internally.

It balances processing power and energy use and will first see the light of day in Lenovo's K800 smartphone. The first phone to use an Intel processor is slated to arrive in Chinese stores this May. China's ZTE also has plans to launch an Intel-powered smartphone during the second half of the year, though it may bring out a tablet towards the end of the year as well.

Tablets are more likely to be powered by a codenamed Clover Trail chip, which will be clocked at 1.8GHz, according to slides at the Chinese event. Acer and Lenovo have already committed to producing tablets containing this chip.

Two other chips for mobile devices are also being developed by Intel. This includes the Atom Z2580, which is said to double the performance of the Z2460 and focus on high-end devices. On the other end of the scale would be the Atom Z2000 that would have a 1GHz clock speed and work in very low-power environments. [via PCWorld]
