Google's Project Glass needs RF certification, more

updated 02:40 pm EDT, Fri April 6, 2012

More Project Glass information revealed

Google's Project Glass used to be called Project Wingfront internally in the [x] labs. Project Glass is the more public-friendly name as knowledge of the device leaked, 9to5Google claimed in a new rumor. The last few months also reportedly saw disagreements within the group, with product developers asking for more time while the management is pushing to release the device to the public.

There are other versions in development as well, including clip-ons for regular eyeglasses and ones built into sunglasses. Near production-ready examples are in use internally, though the decision to share them with the media at the upcoming Google I/O show hasn't been made yet. Still, some units may make into the hands of reviewers in June.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin, who was wearing the glasses, would only say the search firm needs time to bring the glasses out. One issue is that they need to be certified for RF frequency response before they can be sold.

The glasses promise to work like a wearable, voice-controlled smarpthone and may bring augmented reality, turn-by-turn directions, virtual assistant capabilities, a social media organizer, real-time weather, and transportation updates, among others.
