The long-awaited ASUS PadFone due mid-April

The ASUS PadFone is finally ready to go on sale in mid-April. The unique mobile product pairs a smartphone with a tablet dock, which in turn can be docked with a keyboard. It was first unveiled in May last year, but only recently made its first appearance at World Mobile Congress where Electronista had the opportunity to go hands-on with the device.

The PadFone will go on sale April 20, with pre-orders for Taiwanese customers starting tomorrow. The PadFone is powered by dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, and centers on a 4.3-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 960x540. On the rear is an 8-megapixel camera. It runs Android 4.0, which makes it capable smoothly transitioning between smartphone and its tablet form factor. The tablet dock incorporates a 10.1-inch IPS display with a 1280x800 resolution. It adds a 24.4Whr battery to the phone's 1520mAh battery and weighs 724g.

When converted from the local currency, the PadFone will retail for approximately $610 on its own, or $850 with its tablet dock and companion Bluetooth headset/stylus. When the lot is combined with the keyboard, it will cost as much as $980, which may represent good value in the eyes of some as it is effectively capable of being used in three separate configurations.
