Nokia TV official, lets Lumia owners stream on-demand

updated 10:45 am EDT, Wed April 4, 2012

Nokia TV bows in Finland first

Nokia has quickly confirmed brief rumors by launching a new TV service for Lumia owners. Nokia TV will let Windows Phone users stream TV shows from "catch-up" services among local broadcasters without needing an account. Similar to the BBC's iPlayer, it's not intended as a live service but can help users watch shortly after a show airs if they missed the original broadcast.

The service is starting up first in Nokia's home of Finland, where multiple TV networks have their own catch-up services and mobile use is appropriately high. It's implied that Nokia TV may come to the UK and other countries where such services are often used.

A launch in the US isn't likely, although many broadcasters offer their back catalog of TV shows on the web. Nokia Lumias will also be the only Windows Phones to get the app, much as with other exclusives like Drive and Transit.
