HTC Evo 4G LTE official, brings HD Voice and big battery

updated 06:00 pm EDT, Wed April 4, 2012

HTC Evo 4G LTE confirmed

HTC at its live event Wednesday rolled out the Evo 4G LTE. Its adaptation of the One X we tried in February will be the first in the US with HD Voice. The trick ups the effective bitrate of voice to provide a clearer and more natural sound, although Sprint hasn't explained fully how it works.

The adaptation as expected carries namesake LTE for much faster Internet speeds, although it's also now mated to a high-capacity 2,000mAh battery to avoid the historically short battery life of early LTE hardware. Like AT&T's version of the One X, it swaps out the quad-core Tegra 3 but brings in a new dual-core, 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 that's often competitive. The Evo line's signature kickstand has also returned to make videos more enjoyable on a long flight.

Every version gets a fast eight-megapixel rear camera with a smart, distance-sensitive flash, a front 1.3-megapixel camera, and a 4.7-inch, 720p LCD. Android 4.0 is given the expected Sense 4.0 layer along with Beats Audio processing for every app.

The Evo 4G LTE will be available sometime before the end of spring, possibly June 6. When it arrives, it will cost $200 on a contract and will have the same unlimited on-device data as 3G devices for the same minimum $80 voice-and-data price. Pre-orders start May 7.

Stay tuned for a hands-on with the smartphone later in the evening.
