Intel to release Medfield-based tablet for education

Will follow sales model of Classmate PCs

Intel and Lenovo have launched a 10.1-inch Classmate PC -- a ruggedized, classroom-oriented low-cost notebook based on the Atom N2600 dual-core processor -- and Intel is now planning a tablet PC along the same lines, currently code-named "Storybook." The tablet is said by DigiTimes to feature a 10-inch panel that will use Intel's Medfield 32-nanometer mobile-oriented Atom processor, and is aimed at both education and emerging market retail channels.

The strategy will be to make the tablet as inexpensive as possible to help it find a foothold against the iPad in developing markets. The Storybook may be able to be used with either Android or Windows 8 for tablets, offering a certain flexibility, and is seen as a tablet version of the low-cost Classmate PCs. The latest 10.1-inch model of the Classmate will feature Windows 7 and be priced in the $300-400 range. The clamshell model of the Classmate will remind veteran computer users of a cross between the original iBook and Apple's E-Mate, both of which were popular with educators particularly for their tough exteriors.

The Classmate PC line has proven popular in foreign education markets -- over six million have been sold over the past five years, mostly in developing countries. The new 10.1-inch model has already received orders for 158,000 units from Argentina.

The Storybook tablet, which will likely be renamed before hitting the market, is expected to go on sale in the second half of 2012 and may be priced at around or possibly below $300. China-based Malata as well as second-tier notebook maker ECS will make the tablets for Intel. [via DigiTimes]
