Japan Display starts business

Screen technology alliance Japan Display has formally launched operations as of the start of April. The teamwork between Hitachi, Sony, Toshiba, and the government's Innovation Network Corporation of Japan is divided and will have several divisions, some of which are behind the scenes while others will focus on specific markets. It will have separate sections for automotive and mobile devices, such as phones and tablets, along with wider research and production teams.

To start, the new venture will have the equivalent of $2.8 billion in cash, 70 percent of which comes from INCJ while the remaining amount is split equally between the private companies. Staffing is lower than the company had predicted a year earlier: it would have about 6,200 workers instead of the original 7,600. These focused primarily on production.

Japan Display is hoping to succeed partly through keeping the company lean. Nine operating officers run the company, with no executive managing directors or VPs. Each officer is also a division head to help the company move faster than its partnerships would suggest.

The firm was created as the Japanese electronics market faced several factors that threatened the individual companies. The northern Japan earthquake, high currency values at home, and continued slow economies have made it difficult for local companies to compete against Chinese and Korean rivals that can sometimes provide displays for less.
