Rumor has new iMacs using anti-reflective glass from G-Tech

updated 11:50 am EDT, Mon April 2, 2012

Supplier also seen ramping up production for iPad

Updated iMacs may use anti-reflective technology from Taiwanese supplier G-Tech Optoelectronics, according to DigiTimes. A new report cites "industry sources" as indicating that G-Tech will "supply AR (anti-reflective) glass solutions for Apple's all-in-one (AIO) PCs." Current-generation iMacs use purely glossy screens, which can potentially create problems in rooms with bright lighting. "Antiglare" options are only available on some custom MacBook orders.

G-Tech is also estimated to be increasing its capacity for cover glass production this year from 1.8 million units a month to 3 million. The alleged reason is Apple, but for iPad glass, rather than Macs. DigiTimes suggests that G-Tech could account for 25 to 30 percent of iPad cover glass orders during the year.

I hope that rumor is true

The only complaint I have about my iMac is the glossy screen.

    I never understood why

Apple switched from matte to glossy displays. While the display fidelity may be slightly better, the glare and reflections make it completely unusable in some scenarios. We don't all compute in the dark, after all.

Also hope it's going to happen.

If such is the case, I'll be a buyer.
