Brings coverage to total of 7 municipalities

Rogers is expanding its LTE network with clues that key phones are coming soon. The provider is adding support for the high speed data service in two new major Canadian cities outside of Rogers' Ontario core, including Calgary, Alberta and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Rogers indicated that it will be shipping the LTE-capable HTC One X and Nokia Lumia 900 smartphones within weeks, showing that there won't be much gap between the US and Canada.

Rogers initialized its LTE service in Canada's capital, Ottawa last July. Since then it has turned on the service in metro Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, and St. John's in Newfoundland. With the addition of Calgary and Halifax, the company is now able to provide the high speed data service to about 12 million, or one third of Canada's residents. Plans are underway for Edmonton. By the end of the year, Rogers plans on upping that to about 60 percent of Canada's 34.1 million inhabitants.

Rogers currently offers five LTE-ready devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE and HTC Raider smartphones, a tablet, a dongle, and a hotspot. The Lumia 900 is Nokia's flagship Windows Phone. It incorporates a 1.4GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display and an eight-megapixel camera. The One X is HTC's flagship phone, which in Canadian trim will have a dual-core Snapdragon S4 chip and LTE along with Android 4.0.

Pricing for Rogers' LTE service starts at $45 per month for data, although a voice plan is needed as well. Pricing for the Lumia 900 is expected to be $100 CAD ($101 USD) with a three-year contract. Rogers hasn't provided any pricing information for the One X or specifics on expected availability of either phone, although one or both should be ready between April and May.
