Android 4.0 jumps to 2.9% adoption, still well behind iOS 5

Android 4 still slow to get use among phone owners

Google's latest Platform Versions data has shown a relative spike in Android 4.0 use. The current OS now makes up 2.9 percent of Android's active user base, or nearly double the 1.6 percent from a month earlier. It was now near even with all Android 3 versions combined, helped in part by both tablet upgrades and phones like the Galaxy Nexus sharing Android 4 as a common platform.

The adoption still showed most users being on the more than year-old Android 2.3, at 63.7 percent. Another 23.1 percent were on the 2010-era Android 2.2.

While it showed momentum growing for Android 4.0, the stats underscored a continued problem getting most users up to date on the platform. Most phone and tablet designers have yet to roll out updates and could see share grow rapidly in the next few months, but it would leave most hardware without the latest OS for at least half a year, and in some cases will deny an update even to capable mid-range Android phones like the Motorola Droid X2.

The performance contrasts with that of iOS. Apple now has a majority of users on iOS 5.1, even just a few weeks after it launched. The platform has an inherently closed ecosystem and fewer device options, but the limitations also guarantee much faster feature upgrades andcan prevent security problems encountered by Android users, where users face major exploits on devices that could be upgraded but won't because of the individual phone maker.
