Yahoo to begin large workforce cuts next week, more

updated 04:20 pm EDT, Fri March 30, 2012

Yahoo job cuts due next week, then reorganization

The expected Yahoo job cuts may start as soon as next week, if an AllThingsD wrote citing multiple sources proves true. The week after next will see the announcement of a restructuring plan, Tuesday and Wednesday meetings with new CEO Scott Thompson allegedly revealed. The job cuts will reportedly come mainly from the product, research, and marketing arms. The goal is to have about 14,000 employees left over at Yahoo.

While nothing was set in stone, the resulting company is said to be much leaner and focus on media and advertising, along with unspecified future ideas. The layoffs should occur over an extended period of time, as Yahoo is still deciding on how exactly to go about getting rid of its ad technology business and maybe the search business, which collectively account for 2,500 staffers. Thompson was purportedly in talks with Google and Microsoft regarding this.

Sources said the new Yahoo may involve a global media division that would include its communications and search businesses. There would also be smaller ones for global and regional sales. A department of about 50 may be devoted to future innovation.
