Nokia picks up discontinued 'Update' page for Windows Phone

updated 12:00 am EDT, Fri March 30, 2012

Now limited to only Nokia's own models

Nokia has started up a "Where's My Phone Update?" page for owners of their own Windows Phone handsets, helping users keep track of which updates are available for their model in their region. The new page is a revamp of a service originally offered by Microsoft for a time, which was later abandoned due to the complexities of cross-matching updates with specific countries, carriers and phone models.

The Nokia version also includes release notes on updates, telling users specifically what each update will do for their equipment. Users select the model of their phone, pick their region, and are then shown any pending updates and their availability status, along with the brief summary of what the update does, notes Paul Thurrott of Supersite for Windows. He goes on to praise Nokia for providing a clear, easy-to-follow path for Nokia owners to locate and download updates.

For Android and Windows Phone devices, updates are generally provided at the discretion of the contracted carriers, none of whom are responsible for OS development and thus can provide or ignore updates suggested by the OS developer or manufacturer. Some carriers may avoid updating the phone much beyond what came installed on it, hoping for the user to upgrade to a newer or more profitable model. [via Supersite]
