Google Drive details leak, show 5GB and at least Android app

updated 09:00 am EDT, Fri March 30, 2012

Google Drive may be more competitive

Signs that Google Drive is near ready mounted late Thursday with leaks promising more features. A screen cap of a pre-release download page for a Windows app has shown TalkAndroid that it should have 5GB of free space, not the 1GB rumored at one point. The same page also mentions phones and tablets in a sign mobile is a core part of Drive.

Appropriately, an off-hand reference in a Google Docs support page has mentioned Google Drive. There should be at least a "Google Drive Android app" that should theoretically let users edit Google Docs files without having to go to Google Docs by name.

The tips so far haven't mentioned iOS apps, but haven't ruled them out. Support is likely on iPads and iPhones whether or not Google makes its own app, as Drive is expected to have its own API and let app developers build Drive into titles on their own.

While Google's effort may end up matching rivals like Dropbox in some respects, it should have the advantage of tighter integration with Google services and most likely with Android. A release, if true, could come as soon as next week.
