Google Drive might show in early April after years-long wait

Google Drive could get long awaited debut

Google's long-upcoming Google Drive might be close to a real launch after leaks on Tuesday. The cloud storage service was slated by GigaOm sources to be coming during the first week of April. It would potentially be a step back from Dropbox, providing 1GB for free instead of 2GB and thus bringing more people into the paid version.

When it launches, it would have both a native app and a web version, including for companies using Google Apps and their own domains. A programming interface would let third-party apps draw on Google Drive for storage. Its implementation wasn't outlined, but those who had used it were reportedly "impressed."

Google declined to comment.

Although considered one of the most logical paths for Google, online storage has been one of the more elusive features for the search firm. Rumors first appeared as early as 2006, and false starts surfaced over the six years since. Google has been offering an ad hoc solution in storage for Google Docs, but it's currently limited to certain file types.
