Google Play glitch pushes Russian e-mail app onto US devices

updated 09:35 pm EDT, Mon March 26, 2012

Samsung Android devices affected

An apparent Google Play malfunction has caused surprise among some Android users who have discovered a Russian e-mail app installed on their Samsung device. The app, titled "МТС Мобильная Почта" and translated to MTS Mobile Mail, has led many users to believe their device has been affected by malware.

The glitch is not yet believed to be of malicious origin, however, as the same developer that created Samsung's own e-mail app also created the Russian release. Both titles may be accidentally sharing the same signing certificate, causing the Samsung devices to mistakenly download the Russian app as an update to the Samsung client, according to a report from The Verge.

Samsung, Google and the app developer, OJSC, have yet to respond to the situation. Users have reported difficulty removing the app without an official solution, though the Russian app appears to have been removed from Google Play to prevent further accidental installations.
