HTC One X for AT&T gets benchmarked, dominates Android

updated 11:45 pm EDT, Sun March 25, 2012

HTC One X using Snapdragon S4 tops charts

The same source as the original leak of the HTC One X for AT&T has since posted benchmarks showing it possibly taking the crown for the fastest Android device yet. Despite stepping down from the international version's quad-core Tegra 3 to the dual-core Snapdragon S4, the AT&T version was shown by Android Central forum contributor Phonegeek to be roughly twice as fast. Qualcomm's own Vellamo browser test showed the Android 4.0 phone mostly thriving in CPU-heavy JavaScript, a feat borne out by Quadrant's very high CPU and memory scores.

Graphics were a relative weak point, although the newer Adreno graphics engine was still enough in Quadrant to outpace relatively low scores from a Samsung Galaxy Tab (presumably the 10.1) as well as the Galaxy Nexus.

One initial misgiving was with the unspectacular camera responsiveness. While it wasn't called slow, it didn't have the instant shutter action of the Galaxy Nexus.

The One X in AT&T guise is believed to be shipping in mid-May. Although its use of the Snapdragon and 4G LTE are major changes, it's still expected to keep the same design and cameras, as well as the 16GB of built-in storage of the base One X.

    HTC does US a favor

So much for all the hype surrounding NVIDIA's Tegra 3! It gets smoked by the Apple A5 and A5X in graphics performance and now is comprehensively outperformed by the Snapdragon S4 dual-core chip in general performance. When you look at the Tegra 3-powered Transformer Prime's performance in the chart, HTC has done its US customers a massive favor by shipping it with the S4 instead!
