Comcast Xfinity TV for Xbox 360 reaches beta with no cap hit

updated 07:55 pm EDT, Fri March 23, 2012

Xfinity TV on Xbox 360 near ready

Comcast has slipped out through a support page that it's currently beta testing its Xfinity TV app for the Xbox 360. The service as it stands will give Comcast subscribers who sign in access to a large but incomplete pick of Comcast's usual access. It should include the four core broadcasters and build in major premium providers like HBO, The Movie Channel, and Comcast's own Streampix, but it won't have many mid-tier TV networks.

The cable service may raise minor net neutrality questions. Any videos streamed through the Comcast app won't count towards the 250GB monthly cap, encouraging users to watch online only what they already pay for. It may raise concerns that Comcast would be discouraging use of outside service by raising the risk of running over the cap with a rival's product.

Live TV isn't yet an option, but Comcast is exploring the option, according to its statements.

An official live date for Xfinity TV isn't available, although beta testing for an Xbox app is usually a short period before it becomes publicly accessible. Like all Xbox 360 apps so far, the Comcast title should be free outside of the existing subscription. [via AVSForum]
