RIM to hand out BlackBerry 10 test phones at BlackBerry Jam

updated 03:20 pm EDT, Fri March 23, 2012

BlackBerry London may show at RIM dev event

RIM's developer relations VP Alec Saunders revealed in an interview Friday that it would give developers reference BlackBerry 10 phones. Those who visit the BlackBerry Jam developer event in early May, alongside BlackBerry World, would get to work on actual hardware, he told Bloomberg. Saunders cast this partly as reassurance that there wouldn't be another delay, as it was "tangible evidence" of getting closer to shipping.

He cautioned that whatever device developers got would be different than the public-facing phone. It was reportedly not reflective of a rough development state but a deliberate attempt to keep the finished result a secret. "We are holding that back to create the interest around that at launch time," the VP said.

No more than 2,000 of the test phones would be available.

BlackBerry Jam and BlackBerry World this year will be vital for RIM. It has been rapidly losing share and needs to prove that BB10 can be a viable development platform. Much of the mass exodus to Android and the iPhone has been attributed to a mix of superior hardware and friendlier app environments. The new OS will take advantage of considerably more advanced hardware, including multi-core processors and LTE, and should have a much more powerful app framework to start from. Free isn't good enough

At this point, RIM will need to *pay* people to use BlackBerries.
