RIM: iOS developer position is for Mobile Fusion app

updated 07:45 pm EDT, Thu March 22, 2012

RIM explains iOS hire reasoning

RIM quickly tamped down speculation around its hiring an iOS app developer with a response late Thursday. As suspected by AllThingsD and others, the senior developer would be creating an iOS app for Mobile Fusion, its corporate mobile device management tool. A company spokesperson in a statement said that it was an important part of managing iOS hardware.

"In order for BlackBerry Mobile Fusion to perform advanced management functions for iOS devices, RIM will develop an on device client to be included as part of the overall solution," RIM said.

No mention has been made of an Android app, although it's still likely to be necessary.

While it was the most logical course for RIM, which counts Mobile Fusion as its only planned cross-platform option to date, the lack of definite plans had left open the possibility that it was for a cross-platform BlackBerry Messenger port. The job opening's main clue was its mention of an enterprise focus, as well as RIM's historical aversion to porting BBM or any of its other self-developed services to competing phones or tablets.
