ASUS wants to be top non-iPad tablet maker

updated 04:45 pm EDT, Thu March 22, 2012

ASUS global VP said company wants to top tablets

ASUS' global vice president Xu Youjia, while speaking at conference in China earlier this week, revealed the company aims to be the top tablet maker, behind only Apple and its iPad. In order to do so, Youjia indicated the company will innovate rather than follow others, though any specifics, technical or otherwise, weren't shared by the China Times. The company's current flagship tablet is the quad-core Transformer Prime, which uses NVIDIA's Tegra 3 processor.

Youjia did say the company needs to find talented employees to help it in its mission, which is fitting as he was speaking at the National Chengchi University. The company offers two Transformer-branded tablets, which can attach to a hardware keyboard dock for notebook-like functionality.

The Taiwanese hardware maker is also rumored to be working on a Nexus-branded 7-inch tablet for Google. The device would likely cost less than $200 and compete with Amazon's similarly-priced Kindle Fire. Early reports have the small tablet sporting the quad-core Tegra 3 chip and using Android 4.0.

Such a close working relationship with Google, the maker of the Android mobile OS, is certainly key to its mission in being the top tablet maker. Perhaps the biggest competitor that may prevent ASUS' plan from coming to fruition is Samsung and its range of Galaxy Tab devices.

A recent IDC tablet market share had Amazon's Kindle Fire sporting a 16.8 percent share in the summer of 2011, while Samsung's tablets enjoyed 5.8 percent and Apple held 61.5 percent of the global market with iPads. ASUS didn't sell enough tablets to be represented in the ranks.

    Peasants fighting over the scraps

Let Samsung and ASUS duke it out. They both lose. Google will backstab them anyway.

    Adorable

Reminds me of my little nephew. A few days ago he announced he wants to be a millionaire when he grows up. Didn't have the heart to tell the little fella that it's not quite enough to just *want* it. Guess nobody had the heart to tell Xu Youjia the same thing.

...an attainable goal for these guys. Our last ASUS unit is now enjoying its retirement as a well-made bookend.
