Acer Iconia Tab A510 gets US intro, small price gap vs. iPad

Acer Iconia Tab A510 US details

Acer on early Thursday detailed the North American version of the Iconia Tab A510, its first real answer to the new iPad. The quad-core Tegra 3 tablet will reach the US and Canada with 32GB of storage in both black- and silver-backed versions. Every version ships with a 10-inch, 1280x800 display, a five-megapixel rear camera, a front one-megapixel camera, and mini HDMI video out.

Apart from performance, the A510's standouts are software and battery life. Acer lightly customizes Android 4.0 with the Acer Ring, a shortcut that provides quick access to the browser or other elements from wherever the user is, as well as custom widgets for time and weather. A 9,800mAh battery isn't as large as on the iPad, but the lower-resolution screen means a theoretical 12-hour battery life for video playback.

Acer hasn't narrowed down exact ship dates, but stores in both the US and Canada are taking pre-orders now. At $450, the mid-tier Iconia Tab is significantly cheaper than a 32GB iPad but is bracketed on either end by both the cheaper $399 iPad 2 and a $500 iPad with a much sharper display and faster graphics. The device won't be Acer's only answer, as it's planning to ship the A700, although its 1080p screen won't be as sharp as on its Apple parallel.
