WD My Passport hits 2TB with new design

Western Digital undertook a major remake of its My Passport portable hard drives on Tuesday that both claimed a first in capacity and gave it a fresher design. The new versions are the first to ever have 2TB of storage in a portable-sized drive. WD hasn't said how the drive is arranged, although it's more likely to be two 1TB disk than the still-distant single 2TB drives.

Any capacity in the new line has a new patterned shell designed to suffer casual abuse, such as scratches and smudges. Every drive has native USB 3.0, with 2.0 as a fallback, as well as eoptional encryption. Software is strictly optional.

Five colors of the new My Passport will be available, although only some will be available at certain capacities. Prices start off at $130 for a 500GB drive and scale to 750GB ($150), 1TB ($180), 1.5TB ($200), and 2TB ($250). They should be available today both online and in stores.

    It won't be 2 drives

It will be one very fat one. Who writes these things? Clearly not someone with any industry experience.

    Drive Height?

Will it be a 12.5mm two-platter drive, or a 14mm three-platter drive, as WD has used in the past?

If it's 12.5mm, the drive will fit in a MacBook Pro, and this is the drive I've been waiting for. Finally.
