Google Wallet customers get $5 over provisioning issues

updated 11:35 pm EDT, Tue March 20, 2012

Problems said to be resolved

Google has begun distributing $5 credits to Google Prepaid Card accounts, after the fledgling Google Wallet NFC payment service encountered several problems. In response to a security vulnerability, the company had temporarily barred users from creating new cards and blocked the ability to reset the system.

As an extra layer of protection, the Google Wallet apps eventually blocked re-provisioning between users and required Google account sign-in to restore prepaid cards. The company suggests that all funds that were previously placed on the cards should now be accesible.

"We are happy to announce that you can now add the Google Prepaid Card back to your wallet with the newest version of Google Wallet, and any funds that you previously had on the card should be restored, unless you contacted Money Network and asked for a refund of those funds," the company wrote in a brief e-mail statement.

The company notes that users must be running the latest version of the Google Wallet app to add prepaid cards back onto accounts.
