Apple denied request for Motorola's Android info

Apple motion shot down in Motorola lawsuit

One of Apple's lawsuits against Motorola stumbled after Judge Richard Posner denied a motion requesting information about Android development and Google's takeover as the company. The order, issued Monday and available Tuesday, called Apple's demands "vague and overbroad." Motorola's opposition, meanwhile, was "persuasive," Judge Posner said.

Apple could still demand data, according to the Chicago court, but it had to narrow its focus to that of a "manageable and particularized set of documents."

Wide-ranging motions are common in lawsuits between companies, many of which see them as opportunities to get competitive data about a rival. Samsung had briefly tried but failed to get advance detail about future iPads and iPhones under the guise of needing to know if upcoming products might infringe its patents.

Two trials in the US are due to formally start in June, although they may not complete for months or years barring a settlement. Apple has mostly been targeting Android by proxy through its own lawsuits, although Motorola has been accused of misusing standards patents in its countering complaints. [via Bloomberg]
