AcerCloud service coming in April for China, North America

updated 10:25 am EDT, Mon March 19, 2012

Acer dates cloud service for limited April debut

Hardware maker Acer will bring out its AcerCloud online storage service this April, DigiTimes claimed. This launch will be restricted to mainland China and North America only, however, with other countries going live in the fourth quarter of the year. It will come to PCs as well as Android and Windows Phone mobile operating systems, with iOS support coming in the near future, the company hinted.

The company also said between 30 and 40 percent of all of its devices out for sale will have access to the service. It will allow for sharing and remote access of music, videos, documents, photos, and other files from all Acer devices.

AcerCloud is the final form of the company's cloud strategy and is seen as a not entirely intentional parallel to Apple's iCloud, although it also hedges against Google's own cloud services.

Apple has been working on their content, services, and delivery infrastructure since 2001, when iTunes was first released. The iPod was released a few months later, and Apple has relentlessly worked to improve that infrastructure ever since. They're still working on it. iCloud is just taking its first baby steps.

Have fun trying to catch up, Acer, Google and whoever else.
    Good luck with that.
