Microsoft briefly posts job for new Xbox hardware

updated 12:35 pm EDT, Thu March 15, 2012

Xbox audio developer sought, ad pulled quickly

Microsoft is, once again, seeking to fill a job position for a Software Development Engineer for the next Xbox. The ad was pulled, most likely because it makes a reference to a "next generation console." It does seek a software engineer to develop content for the console, and the job is based at Microsoft's Redmond, Washington headquarters.

The right candidate would join Microsoft's ISS Console Multimedia Team and focus on developing audio. That person would also ideally love gaming, game audio, and music, along with technical, programming, and other skills and experience related to the job, which includes development of the core audio stack.

Microsoft has been accelerating its recruiting for the new hardware, hunting down 3D engineers, among others. The positions all hint that Microsoft is in mid-development and hoping to boost the media features of the future Xbox hardware first.

Little has escaped of what the system itself involves, although it's tentatively codenamed Durango and might have six times faster graphics. Recent, unconfirmed rumors have had it dropping the optical drive and at most using removable cards for storage, although this isn't considered as likely given the very large sizes expected for next-generation games.
