Microsoft Office 15 to allow 'Agave' web extensions

updated 10:25 am EDT, Thu March 15, 2012

Office 15 to support web extensions dubbed Agaves

The Office 15 program suite coming alongside Windows 8 will support web extensions dubbed Agaves from third-party developers, The Verge found. Developers will have the ability to make a section in an Office app to let websites interact with documents in order to bring extra features. Users will get the Agaves from Microsoft's Office Marketplace as well as the developer sites themselves.

Excel 15, Word 15, Outlook 15, and Project Professional 15 will run Agaves, as well as Excel, Outlook, and Mobile Outlook web apps. Three ways to integrate Agaves into the apps include Task Pane, Content, and Contextual. In Task Pane, the extension will sit beside the Office document and let users get more information from the web on a highlighted word or phrase in a document. Content will embed web pages into a document that can be shown in line with documents. These could include YouTube links or a photo gallery. Contextual Agaves will work with Outlook and integrate with mail or calendar items as well.

Agaves will support HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and REST coding. Microsoft would like to see them in the Metro style, with an emphasis on look.

An official announcement is expected later this year, along with a release in Office Public Marketplace, where developers can publish and sell their Agaves.
