HTC Vivid gets new OS upgrade

HTC pushed out its first US Android 4.0 upgrade on Thursday with a delivery to the Vivid. Although not yet automatic, AT&T subscribers can dial *#*#682#*#* and get what appears to be a finished build on the 4G smartphone. AT&T hasn't yet said when the update rolls out on a wider basis.

The version as shown is a hybrid of Vivid's original Sense 3.0 and the Sense 4.0 seen on the One series. It keeps the old home screen app unlock ring and most of the earlier look of the app launcher and widgets, but it has the new, much more functional app launcher at the bottom of the home screen as well as the Android 4.0-only Roboto font and an overall subtler appearance.

For most Vivid owners, the upgrades will be behind-the-scenes additions, such as a faster stock browser and support for Chrome for Android. Performance doesn't take a hit apart from initial caching in a browser like Chrome. [via XDA-Developers and The Verge]
