AOL: AIM to stay alive despite team layoffs

Several dozen employees cut from AIM team

AOL has quickly denied speculation that it was planning to cease its AOL Instant Messenger service. The company recently acknowledged that it would cut the AIM division staff by approximately 40 employees in the near future, igniting rumors that the layoffs were a sign that the company was stepping away from the service.

The company told Computerworld that "we are not killing Instant Messenger" and it will "continue to support and evolve the product."

Despite the promise to maintain the popular messaging service, the significant staff reductions have placed doubt on the frequency of software updates and the ability of the company to quickly respond to outage and other problems. [via The Verge]
