Oink to shut down on March 31 after brief run

Oink shuts down under claims of test

Tech idea incubator Milk posted notice Wednesday that it was shutting down its local rating service Oink. While the iOS app had already stopped checking for new updates, the company told users they would have until March 31 before the site and existing content would be taken down. The company argued that Oink was its "first test" in quickly building ideas and that it wanted focus as it was "preparing to move onto the next project."

Existing users of the invitation-only service were being given ways to export and keep the various ratings and reviews.

Milk was co-founded by Digg creator Kevin Rose and had relatively early success. Despite the controlled conditions, about 150,000 users downloaded the app in its first month following a November release. Its intentionally capped audience and specific nature, where users were rating individual menu items or attractions, kept its use lower than broader services like Foursquare or Yelp.

The company didn't say whether or not active use played a role, but it did promise more news "soon."
