Rumor has 15-inch MacBook Air launching in April

updated 11:55 am EDT, Wed March 14, 2012

Model would still leave out Ethernet, optical

A 15-inch MacBook Air should ship in April, according to a vendor source at CU Exposed, a UK expo which had its spring event yesterday. Electricpig describes the vendor as a "premium Mac accessory maker," and "a key player in MacBook docking solutions." Few other claims about the new Air have been made, other than it should resemble other Airs in having ports on both sides but no Ethernet jack or optical drive.

The vendor is said to be convinced enough that a new Air model is coming that it has put its manufacturers on standby, ready to make and ship new products within 90 days. The source suggests that the 15-inch system could disrupt the MacBook Pro, which has traditionally been the only MacBook to have a 15-inch option. It's speculated that Apple might at least hold on to the 17-inch Pro.

A relative handful of reports have hinted at the prospect of a 15-inch Air. The Air has proven especially successful for Apple, and the company may want to further those sales. Apple has also been shifting its design philosophy in favor of products like the Air, which emphasize thinness and simplicity over comprehensive functionality.

I'm going to either get a 15" MacBook Pro (Air) or a refurb the Oct 2011 MacBook Pro. I'll compare the specs and capabilities and decide which will be the best for me. It's a good time to be in the market for a 15" Mac Laptop.

There is always the USB-Ethernet adaptor if you need wired connectivity. Or better yet, buy the Thunderbolt display which incorporates a gigabit Ethernet port on the backside along with FW800, Thunderbolt, headphone jack and USB ports. All this plus a built-in Magsafe A/C adapter, FaceTime camera and speakers.

The ethernet adaptor works flawlessly. I plug it in every morning at work. Lack of an ethernet plug is a non issue, or rather I'd rather the adaptor than have a thicker profile.

    Yes, 15" Air...

But the front panel will say MacBook Pro. The key here is that Apple is making the Pro line a high-end version of the Air. 15" Says "Pro" to me, and as the features/speeds become more and more similar, Apple needs screen size to remain a distinction.

    The future of notebooks

Re: "The source suggests that the 15-inch system could disrupt the MacBook Pro..."

Or maybe the new 15" notebook is, in fact, the new 15" MacBook Pro. Way back in January 2008, Steve Jobs demo-ed the first MacBook Air. He said "We think this is the future of notebooks." The MacBook Air ads all featured the tag line "The future of notebooks."

Well that was more than four years ago. We are now living in that future. Maybe the new 15" notebook is actually a slimmer, more tapered, optical-drive-free MacBook Pro? And maybe the rest of the MacBook Pro line will also become thinner, more tapered, and optical-drive free.
