BBC's Project Barcelona video store made official

updated 06:35 pm EDT, Wed March 14, 2012

Endeavor still in proposal stage

BBC director Mark Thompson has reportedly confirmed that the company is considering its own digital video store. The video portal, which is currently referred to as Project Barcelona, would serve as a repository for the company's archived content, enabling viewers to purchase digital copies of older programs or new content.

Recent reports suggest only a fraction of BBC's library becomes permanently available to download after it airs. The company already offers a digital streaming service, known as iPlayer, however it pulls shows after a 30-day window as the rights transfer back to the original producers.

The broadcaster still has to submit the proposals to the BBC Trust later this year, and the range of content will depend on support from content producers that currently hold licensing rights for the archived content, according to a BBC report.

Leaks suggest the downloads are expected to be priced around 1.89 (~$3 USD) per show, though official details have yet to be announced.
