Amazon adds Discovery shows to Prime offerings

Amazon has just revealed a deal with Discovery Communications that will let Amazon Prime members stream content from the media company. This includes episodes from non-current seasons from Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Science and Military Channel, and other content that dates back 25 years. Some of the available shows will include Dirty Jobs, Say Yes To The Dress, and Whale Wars.

The total number of available titles offered by Amazon Prime will have grown to 17,000 with the Discovery addition. Amazon still has over 120,000 titles through traditional discs.

The Prime service costs $79 per year and min addition to unlimited video streaming and one e-book rental per month from the Kindle Owner's Lending Library, offers free, two-day shipping on any purchased or rented items from Amazon.

Is adding Discovery is part of a longer push both to build absolute market share for its video service relative to Netflix as well as an attempt to bolster content for the Kindle Fire. Amazon sells the Fire at break even or loss and is counting on Prime subscriptions to make up the difference.
