Sony adds sola to expanding Xperia lineup

Sony has added the Xperia sola to its growing portfolio of Android-powered smartphones. The new mid-range device centers on a 3.7-inch 854x480 LCD Reality Display that also incorporates a new 'floating touch' interface. The Xperia sola will sense where a user's finger is above a display and track it like a mouse, even allowing a user to highlight a weblink without actually touching the screen.

Like the Xperia S, the new handset still ships with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) although it is readily upgradeable to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) when Sony eventually gets around to releasing an update this summer. The device also takes a number of styling cues from the Xperia S, although loses that model's signature translucent notification strip at the bottom of the handset.

At the heart of the Xperia sola is a new dual-core NovaThor processor (U8500) from ST-Ericsson clocked at 1.GHz. It is also equipped with NFC meaning that it is compatible with Sony's new Xperia SmartTags. A five-megapixel camera adorns the rear and is capable of 720p video shooting and 2D/3D sweep panorama stills. The feature is list is rounded out by xLOUD and 3D surround audio while the device weighs just 107g.

The Xperia sola comes in black, white and red versions.
