Samsung applies for patent for smart 'skins' for devices

updated 06:10 pm EDT, Tue March 13, 2012

Creates image on changeable wrap-around film layer

Samsung has applied for a patent with the USPTO for a flexible image display technology. Using it, an individual could easily create a 'skin' on a smartphone or tablet that could change the appearance of the device on demand. Although it might have uses elsewhere, Samsung has specifically limited the scope of its patent application to mobile devices.

Conceptually, the technology takes a digital image and is able to wrap it around a device electronically. Samsung, in its application, describes the retail consumer market as being a prime opportunity. Customers could buy the products as an accessory. It would be packaged as a film layer on a card. They would then peel the film off of the card and wrap it on their mobile device. They could then create the desired image or effect around their entire device.

As with most patents, no guarantee exists that the patent will lead to a real product, although the pragmatic nature of Samsung's invention makes it more probable. [via Patent Bolt]
