Apple rumored using thin bezel tech for 7.85-inch iPad

updated 07:20 am EDT, Mon March 12, 2012

Mini iPad may take thin bezel to maximize design

A rumor starting the week has the often claimed 7.85-inch small iPad using relatively new technology to make the most of its screen. Part suppliers told Digitimes they anticipated Apple using thin bezel technology to make sure as much of the screen was available as possible. Indirectly supporting this, they expected that Shuriken panel designer LG Display would make the IPS or FFS (in-plane or field fringe switching) LCD.

AU Optronics had previously been tapped as a second supplier and was mentioned here.

The suppliers speculated that the smaller design would cost no more than $299 and was intended to curb the influence of the Kindle Fire and, to a lesser extent, historically poor-selling seven-inch regular Android tablets. Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 is likely to help define the low end of tablets in 2012 and may be a target for Apple.

Along with historically more credible sources pointing to a small iPad, the size might be partly supported by Apple's newer iPad strategy. Along with a $399 iPad 2 showing a willingness to offer cheaper iPads, its decision to simply refer to the third-generation model as the "new iPad" could parallel the iPod strategy of several years ago, where one definitive model exists and any others get variants on that name.

    Please...

No more 7" iPad rumors. They've been going on for two years now, so no one believes them any more. It doesn't matter if the ghost of Jobs made a personal apparition before you. We're just not believing it any more.

No more stories about 7" iPads until it actually appears (if ever) on Apple's website.

    Agreed...

No more stories. A smaller iPad was supposed to appear at the recent event. Who ever these rumor mongers are they have NO credibility. Apple may be working on one, but if so, they have a definite reason for delaying it, and it doesn't seem that the rumor-frauds have a clue... they just like getting web ink.

    Soooo looking forward to this

I am spending all day today, well, much of it anyway, to turn my iPad into a cell phone. I am tired of carrying two devices. A 10" iPad with telephony is good, a 7-8" iPad with telephony will be kick a**. No more iPhone. Pay the ETF and save a bunch of freaking money each month. iPad (3) will be here on the 16th and I think that with it's LTE it will replace my iPhone. Fingers crossed. If anyone has any suggestions for telephony software, please let me know. Im playing with Talkatone with now.

    ~8" iPad will happen.

It is just a question of when. I have used the v1 iPad a lot and am working on an app. The fact is that the ~10" size is far from ideal for a) any what I call "walkaround" usage, b) ereader or c) GPS. Just too unwieldy and/or too heavy.

Those 3 alone are hugely important usages that can define users' preferences. Walkaround usage in particular is one that many enterprise usage apps will focus on, and Apple does not want MS to be able to parlay its (shrinking) desktop OS dominance into the enterprise tablet space with Win8 mobile.

Comments regarding SJ's preference for the ~10" size for v1 are just DUMB. Successful products evolve to include new variants, just like the iPod did, and Steve Jobs initial (correct) adamant preference for the large size initially did not mean that he would never evolve the product.

@MyRightEye - There is an alternative right now!

    With the Galaxy Note 5.3,
You get a very pocketable tablet with built in telephony,
plus if you are an artist,
or just like jotting down stuff,
you will fall in love with the the built in inductive digitizer,
with hardware palm rejection and pressure sensitivity,

And you will not miss the iPhone's gorgeous screen,
    for at 1280X800,
    the very bright AMOLED display,
    will captivate you.

Too small to be a tablet. Too big to be a phone. Too awkward to be in between. Arne, what pants do you wear that have nearly 6 inch pockets?

On the actual topic, maybe the fact that the new iPad was JUST RELEASED AND THERE IS NO 7" GODDAMN iPAD should be a clue that it is ABSOLUTELY NOT HAPPENING.

Sorry for the caps, but it seems some people just don't get it.

    LOL @ Arne

Yeah, I'd like some decent apps, like Appigo's ToDo app to go along with my tablet. I bought an Android tablet. Androids best apps are about as good as the one's Apple rejects.
