Fujifilm explains X10, X-S1 'white orb' flaw and fix

updated 07:55 pm EDT, Mon March 12, 2012

CMOS sensor creates circular distortion

Recently, some Fujifilm owners complained about a bloomin, white disc, or white orb visual artifacts with their X-S1 and X10 digital cameras. The company on Monday met promises of supplying more details and has acknowledged that the cameras' CMOS sensors, under certain lighting situations, will create the effect. The company has promised to resolve the problem with both firmware and sensor updates.

The problem can occur in extreme situations, such as when shooting a night scene with a car's headlight's shining back towards the camera. Some highlights may be distorted, and appear as round shapes. The company advises that while any camera would experience some sort of distortion, the pattern displayed is somewhat unique.

Fujifilm announced a firmware update for the X10 in February that helps to minimize the problem. It will be releasing one for the X-S1 on March 21. The patch automatically raises the ISO level and optimizes the dynamic range under conditions that are conducive to the blooming.

The company also disclosed it is developing a modified CMOS sensor that definitively should resolve the problem. It has promised that the new sensor will be made available in May, although it hasn't said if there will be a way to trade in cameras for a permanent fix.
